Our wins: Our losses: 50-species caps removed; regional collaboration for management of IAS native to EU; polluter pays principle; animal welfare considerations (Arts. 17 & 19). Our losses: The Union List of terrestrial vertebrates will be a Negative List; lack of criteria to identify “humane methods” for management and eradication measures ; no reference to funding or strategies for placing confiscated/ unwanted animals.
Eurogroup’s main areas of interest on IAS Develop, exchange and spread scientifically based best practices for humane management of IAS in Member States (Arts. 17 &19). Control methods should be clearly identified considering the target specificity, effectiveness humaneness, cost, environmental impact, etc.
Develop guidance on strategies for handling confiscated and unwanted pets: no reference to funding or strategies for placing animals are included in Arts. 31-32.
Adopt a positive list of exotic pets in Member States: international pet trade is a main pathway for IAS.
