Challenger STS- 51L Crew The Challenger crew was headed to space on January 28, 1986. 73 seconds into launch the space shuttle exploded. All seven astronauts were lost. The Challenger Centers were started by the members of the families left behind to honor and continue the mission of the crew. Christa McAuliffe- was to be the first teacher in space Christa McAuliffe- was to be the first teacher in space. Her back up, Barbara Morgan, finally became the first educator in space in 2007.

Mission Control is located on Earth Mission Control is located on Earth. It is modeled after the real Mission Control at Johnson Space Center (Houston). The job of the Mission Control is to monitor the status of the astronauts on board the space station and to help achieve all mission goals. MISSION CONTROL

During the mission the Space Station is orbiting above Earth’s surface at about 227 miles. The astronauts on board are in search of Comet Encke. SPACE STATION

ROBOTIC ARMS ISOLATION REMOTE The Isolation (ISO) team and Remote (REM) team will be using robotic arms to pick up and transfer various objects.

ROBOTIC ARM CONTROLS CLOSE CLAW OPEN CLAW DIAGRAM THAT TELLS YOU These are the joysticks used to move the robotic arms. Just follow the diagram. NEVER move both joysticks at the same time, unless you move one forward and one backwards simultaneously. This will move the claw and arm either forward or backward. If you move the joysticks at the same time in any other fashion, the robotic arm will stick. Then you will have to give it a 6 second break to unstick before it will move again. DIAGRAM THAT TELLS YOU WHICH WAY TO MOVE THE JOYSTICKS JOYSTICK

INCOMING MESSAGES Astronauts will receive messages from their teammates through this messaging system. Even though this says Isolation, all teams will use this box with the exception of NAV and PROBE. They will talk directly to each other on headset. AFTER YOU CLICK ON THE YELLOW FLASHING BOX YOUR INCOMING MESSAGE WILL APPEAR IN THIS SCREEN. CLICK CLOSE AFTER YOU READ THE MESSAGE. IF YOU HAVE NEW MESSAGES THIS BOX WILL FLASH YELLOW.

OUTGOING MESSAGES THIS BOX WILL APPEAR. CLICK ON NEW. Astronauts will send messages to their teammates through this messaging system. Even though this says Isolation, all teams will use this box with the exception of NAV and PROBE. They will talk directly to each other on headset. THIS BOX WILL APPEAR. CLICK ON NEW.
