Types of variation
Inherited variation Eye colour is an example of inherited variation. These features are caused by genes. They cannot be changed by anything in the environment.
Environmental variation Having pierced ears or a tattoo is an example of environmental variation. These features are not caused by genes. They can be different in individuals with identical genes.
Variation influenced by both genes and the environment An example of this type of variation is how good you are at dancing or sport. These features show inherited variation but can be influenced by your environment too.
