Chapter 9 Lesson 3 & 4

What is overweight, and why is it dangerous? Overweight is weighing more than is healthy for a person of your gender, height, age, and body type. This is dangerous because of increased risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer later in life.

What is underweight, and why is it dangerous? Underweight is weighing less than is healthy for a person of your gender, height, age, and body type. This is dangerous because underweight teens may not be getting enough nutrients that their body needs, may develop anemia, may not be able to fight off infections or illness, and they may not have enough body fat that would keep them warm of give them energy reserves.

Why is the energy equation important to your body? The energy equation has to do with calories in versus calories out. If you want to lose weight, you must burn off more calories than you eat. If you want to gain weight, you must eat more calories than you can burn off.

Why should teens not diet? By dieting as a teen, you risk harming your body. You should let your body grow into its self. By dieting, you may be cutting out on key nutrients that your body needs in this time of growth.
