Terms Christian – believes Jesus is the Messiah Apostle – one of the original 12 followers of Jesus. Paul was a disciple because he spread the word. Disciple – a follower who spread the word/teachings of Jesus. The 12 apostles are disciples. But it doesn’t follow that all disciples are apostles!. New Testament – 2nd half of the Bible detailing Jesus’ teachings Gospels – accepted accounts of Jesus written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Crucifixion – Execution of Jesus. Leads to the symbols of Christianity. Resurrection – Jesus’ return after his death.

Roman Empire Romans had conquered a vast empire including Canaan (the promised land of the Jews.) The Roman Republic becomes Imperial Rome under an Emperor shortly before Christ is born. This creates a problem for the Jews. HOW? / WHY? (think about how emperors viewed themselves…)

The Beginnings of Christianity in Bethlehem The Jews were awaiting the Messiah. (Redeemer / chosen one) to save them. Jesus is born and is proclaimed “King of the Jews”.

The Return For the next 30 years nothing,,, Begins to gather followers. 12 core followers are Apostles (ones you will hear about include – Peter, Matthew, John, Luke, Mark, Judas, Thomas) Starts to preach about redemption. Baptized by John who calls him the Messiah

Jesus Spends 3 years preaching, performing miracles and telling parables. Claims to be the Messiah / son of God. Upsets the Jewish leadership enough that they ask the Romans to help stop him. Judas…

Death After arrest, tried and found “guilty” by Pilate. Crucified On 3rd day rose again. Appears to his followers several times. Thomas 40 days ascends. Apostles spread the word…

The Resurrection: The Church Triumphant

St. Paul: Descipile to the Gentiles

The Spread of Christianity

St Peter Founds the Church of Rome. Becomes the first bishop of Rome POPE The beginning of the Catholic or universal Church
