CEW Interactive! There will be prizes for correct answers to my questions today. Brief intro: this inservice idea came out of CEW GI last summer. Teachers from hs & kv attended as well as hs & kv administrators, Eastern administration and our central administration. Topic has changed. Reorientation. Thank teachers who have dared to try CEW in their classrooms. Especially those who took advantage of EIW. How many teachers have been teachers their entire career? How many teachers have served their entire professional life at HH? Survey years of service. 5/10/15/20… Point: Teachers/educators are one of a very few professionals who stay in the same field and role and work for the same employer for their entire career. Most of our students will not. They will have on average, 7 different careers and work for 14 employers.

1. Does anyone remember which presidential candidate’s campaign slogan was, “It’s the economy, stupid”? PA’s Macro View

Economic Development = Workforce Development + Career Development Our nation and state’s economic health is dependant on economic development. Economic develop begins in schools through career development interventions. PA can attract employers if they can promote a well educated and prepared workforce. The foundation of the three D’s is Career Development. And this is why the state adopted these standards. This is why these standards now.

CEW standards: Connecting our program of study to areas of opportunity in the Commonwealth through the 4 strands of CEW. Can anyone name the 4 strands? Awareness (of self, ability, opportunity), acquisition (preparation: personal, professional & community), retention (21st Century Skills), eship (using 21st Century skills to advance vs. traditional def of eship. High priority jobs in the DE Valley? Healthcare. Engineering. Energy. Energy: +200,000 jobs created NEW jobs in next ten years in eastern PA. PA’s Micro View

Reality #1 Quick survey: Where did you grow up? Chester Co? Delaware Co? Bucks Co? Philadelphia? NJ? DE? Montgomery Co? Anyone, anywhere else? Our five county region is more likely than any other metropolitan area in the country to retain our youth. Our kids live here, work here and raise their own kids here. The reality is they need to be prepared for the jobs that will be here for our area to sustain it’s economic health. They need to be prepared for family sustaining professions. We need to connect our kids to opportunity.

Reality #2 What gateway do most of our students use as they leave high school? 86% go to college Where do most of our students go to college? 50% of HH college bound have gone to Montgomery County Community College (past 3 years data) Major: Undeclared. Chances of success? Slim. MCCC has not provided the answers…..I’ve asked. State data: 80% who attend any college undeclared do not finish within 5 years. Ken Gray study: Eastern Mont. Co. (Other Ways to Win)

HH CEW Goal Long term goal setting., decision making.. 21st Century Skills A realistic plan, based on dreams and based in reality. (make note of the baseball coach kid) Beginning this school year all HH juniors will write a personal transition plan that has a high probability of success. Confirm with course selection and experiences (Pathways and Community Based Learning experiences). HH CEW is not about deciding what you want to be when you grow up. It’s about learning how to critically analyze self and goals related to opportunities around us. We do not expect the first decision to be the right one, but as our students grow and learn more about themselves they will have the skills to reassess their situation. “For this generation, career maturity is as important as academic maturity. Both predict post-high school success.” Ken Gray

The 2009-2010 Game Plan Scope & Sequence Supported by Lunch & Learn, Pathway Field Trips, Green Fair Community Based Experiences The changes every year. As we learn we get better. Success for our students is a result of the organic nature of our program. The 2009-2010 Game Plan

We are in the infancy. The standards have been adopted into law. The state is developing strategies for measurement of delivery. In this time of PA budget crisis, the Career Development Leaders Network (a group of professionals from across the commonwealth) work has been refunded and is working while other programs are waiting to learn what their future will be. The Future of CEW

Resources Review handout materials. HANDOUT For lesson planning. Great ideas for emergency lesson plans. We live in an area with much resource. Use me as a resource. Discuss ways I support teachers, departments, etc.
