Lesson-Design Elements That Reflect the College- and Career-Ready Standards for Mathematics and the Standards for Mathematical Practice

Why was the lesson, Using Positive and Negative Numbers in Context, an example of an exemplary lesson? In your groups, revisit the following questions to reflect and discuss the task and the lesson plan. Did this lesson target a set of grade level mathematics standard(s) at the level and rigor expected in the College- and Career-Ready Standards? Are the Mathematical Practice Standard(s) identified, handled in a grade-appropriate way, and well connected to the content being addressed? Did the lesson present a balance of mathematical procedures and deeper conceptual understanding?

Unpacking the Standards Everyone needs to pull up the ALEX website. Click on Course of Study, then Mathematics then alabamainsight If you are unable to log on with your district, select ALSDE (Alabama 1) Username guest Password guest click continue

A Collaborative Lesson Study Everyone needs to log on to the alabamainsight College- & Career-Ready Standards & Support After you typed in your username and password select K-12 Mathematics Now we are ready to Unpack the Standards guest If you do not know your password or unable to log on

Using Positive and Negatives Numbers in Context Lesson to Unpack the Standards The task used in the lesson, Using Positive and Negative Numbers in Context, could easily be used in other grades. The Common Core Standards are listed in the lesson plan for 7th grade only, however supporting standards are not listed or standards from other grades. Using the alabamainsight tool, list all standards or supporting standards in the grades checked that support this lesson. * *For Example Grade 6 CCRS Standard 8

Alabama Curriculum Guides Unpacking the Standards for Students with Special Disabilities

Alabama Curriculum Guides Designed for students who are not performing at grade level Include objectives that are prerequisite to the standard and/or break the standard down into smaller instructional units. We would like to make sure everyone is familiar with the Alabama Curriculum Guides. The Alabama Curriculum Guides can be useful for all students, not just students with disabilities! They are designed for students who are not performing at grade level and They include objectives that are prerequisite to the standard and/or break the standard down into smaller instructional units.

Alabama Curriculum Guides Prepare students for study of the grade-level standards Allow students to work at individual ability levels Allow teachers to address the achievement gap The Alabama Curriculum Guides prepare students for study of the grade-level standards through the teaching of prerequisite and enabling skills necessary for learning each content standard. This allows students to work toward grade-level and course content standards while working at individual ability levels. By identifying the prerequisites and enabling skills for each standard, teachers may plan instruction to address the achievement gap experienced by some students while still working with all students toward achievement of the same standards.

Unpacking the Standards for your Lesson or Sample Lesson First, unpack all standards for your lesson using the alabamainsight tool. Secondly, review these questions to see if the lesson is meeting this criteria and meeting the needs for all students. Did this lesson target a set of grade level mathematics standard(s) at the level and rigor expected in the College and Career-Ready Standards? Are the Mathematical Practice Standard(s) identified, handled in a grade-appropriate way, and well connected to the content being addressed? Did the lesson present a balance of mathematical procedures and deeper conceptual understanding? Is your lesson a College- and Career-Ready lesson? Why? What can make your lesson better? How?
