Meeting the Need for Information Schoolwide Positive Behavior Supports Meeting the Need for Information

Schoolwide Change The First Three Years A need for: more information understanding how it impacts me knowing how to manage new work During the first three years of a school-wide change process, concerns generally reflect at least one of the following three themes: A need for more information about the change; A need for information about how the change will impact a person on a day-to-day basis (including whether that person has the skills necessary to implement the change); and A need to know how to manage new work requirements (such as how to embed schoolwide expectations in the current curriculum)

Need for Information Consider: Is your staff informed about SW-PBS? Systems and approach Guiding principles Key features Universals How was the staff introduced/trained/educated How is new staff introduced/trained/educated Information to know: What is SW-PBS

Need for Information Is the staff: Familiar with behavioral issues in the school Concerned about decreasing problem behaviors Committed to increasing academic performance To perceive the need for change, an understanding of what is before seeing what can be A desire to change outcomes – a change in current practice required If you always do what you have done, you will continue to get what you have always gotten. Being asked to change outcomes and will need support to improve or change current practice.

Strategies Information: Kick-off for staff Training by team for staff Overview and refresher Each step/phase For new and returning staff Articles, reports, summaries, books, study groups, etc. Tells what is planned for year Theme or focus Timelines or targets Manageable chunks Learning styles, interaction with information, relating to situation

Strategies Assess need for information OLI Open-ended statement Surveys already in use On-going One Legged Interview – Schools are busy & everything happens on the run - the clock is ticking Brief moments of conversations can be turned into ‘critical opportunities’ Ask to describe what they are doing, thinking of doing, feels about what they are doing Important to resolve concerns as a team + and – Paper with statement at top…”When you think about PBS, what concerns do you have? Can categorize statements Can be used before meeting or workshop
