Who are we? Officer intros

Who are you? Never been at club event? Freshmen? Non-undergrads?

What is the club? The student-run computing organization at CMU

What does the club do? Host services for campus Contributed webserver: www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu Tartans wiki: www.tartanswiki.org Wikis for student organizations Usenet server, Jabber IM server, FTP software archives, …

What does the club do? Hold social events Movies (held one last week of August) Retro games nights Demo nights Like this one! …ideas??

What does the club do? Advocacy/education/outreach Give away Linux CDs & encourage people to use free software Host lively, if impenetrable, discussions on amusing contemporary issues Act as voice of student opinion on CMU computing policies Host/give talks on fun/useful/obscure topics By students, or companies trying to recruit …ideas??

What does the club do? Historical preservation Ancient machines can be fun to play with They don’t make them like they used to… No, we don’t use them to do actual work! We have a lot of DEC Alphas, VAXen, Suns, 1980s Apples, an SGI Indy… Yes, many of these of these are still running Might just be the last machines on the net running various OSes Has anyone broken in with the Morris bug yet?

Club Machine Room Cyert Hall B6 (B7) 40+ machines Genuine raised floor (newer-than) Halon fire suppression 125 amps!

Major recruiting effort Historically, two circles: ~5-10 people who do everything 20-50+ (you!) who come to events We want to change that! Stay tuned for project ideas… You don’t have to be a unix expert It’s not a huge time commitment We do a lot more than just run servers

Project Discussion See the wiki: http://wiki.club.cc.cmu.edu/org/ccwiki/Freshman_Project_Ideas Backup PDF: http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~mdille3/cclub_frosh_ideas.pdf
