Metals and Acids 23/2/15 Starter: Prediction: What do you think will happen when metals are placed in acid. Explain your answer Success criteria- Record observations and evidence systematically. Describe patterns and trends in results. Describe the test for hydrogen. Write word equations for reactions. Metals neutralise Acids to form a salt and Hydrogen

Practical Activity EXPERIMENT- Add a metal to acid and collect any gas that comes off. Test the gas. Write what you observe You will conduct a test for HYDROGEN gas – H2

To know how metals react with acids. Observations in acid Squeaky pop test Do all metals react the same? What gas is produced? How do you test for this gas? Which metal is the most reactive? Which metal is the least reactive? What new products have you made?

What has been made during the reaction? Acid Name of salt Hydrochloric Chloride Sulphuric Sulfate Nitric Nitrate Why –ide or –ate? Acid Formula Hydrochloric HCl Sulphuric H2SO₄ Nitric HNO₃ What is different about hydrochloric but the same about nitric and sulfuric?

What has been made during the reaction? Metal + acid -> salt + hydrogen Magnesium + hydrochloric -> magnesium + hydrogen acid chloride The name ‘chloric’ becomes chloride and gets added to the metal to become a salt

Activity 3 Patterns in the salts Acid Second reactant Name of salt hydrochloric iron iron chloride Zinc Lead nitric magnesium Sulphuric calcium sulfuric copper carbonate copper sulfate sodium carbonate zinc carbonate Complete the table to show the name of the salt that will form when these substances react. Acid Name of salt Hydrochloric Chloride Sulfuric Sulfate Nitric Nitrate

Plenary Success criteria- Record observations and evidence systematically. Describe patterns and trends in results. Describe the test for hydrogen. Write word equations for reactions. Write down five sentences which summarise the lesson. Then reduce this to five words. Finally, to just one word. SHARE WORDS! Team workers
