Presentation transcript:

Located in Lewisburg, PA, is a highly selective, private university founded in 1846. 450-acre campus includes more than 100 facilities Approximately 3500 students, 360 faculty and 840 staff members IR and IT are separate

My data story… …it’s (not) funny because it’s true!

Where does “Faculty Count” come from? It is based on all FT faculty, using the ECLS of FF in Banner, and the Job Family Group of Faculty with a time type of Fulltime in Workday. Depending on the reporting requirements, we sometimes include the faculty who are filling in for faculty on sabbatical, and sometimes we do not. Including them in things like faculty to student ratio would skew the numbers because we would be counting both the faculty member who is on sabbatical and the faculty member who is filling in and teaching their classes. I also work with the Provost Office to adjust these counts for special circumstances. The final spreadsheet shared with IR is a collaboration between HR (Using Banner) data, the Provost Office, and IR, and would include these manual adjustments.

Bucknell BI Charter (Late 2012) Improve our capacity to measure performance, find data trends and exceptions and grow a data- driven decision culture across all divisions. Form a common data store and shared access model that eliminates data silos and enables both strategic analytics and operational reporting. Enable point-in-time and historical data snapshots for analysis over time. Ensure comprehensive integration with Banner data, including adjusting legacy business processes to maximize the value from this system. Establish consistent use of data definitions, audit documentation, and data stewardship across multiple University dimensions. Consolidate intelligence tools to maximize our analytics competencies at all functional levels while minimizing the technical support footprint. Create executive dashboards to assist with deliberations and decisions. IT project? Yes, but… Lot’s of implications for IR.

Old BUI Environment ODS/EDW New Data Platform Banner Data Platform EPM11 going away for 2 reasons: 1) Will not work with new systems and 2) Oracle dropping support. TEK Systems was engaged to help us address these requirements. Many of you participated in interviews with TEK at the end of April.

Operational Reporting New BUI Environment Data Warehouse Cross-Functional Operational Reporting Strategic Reporting Dashboards Data Repository Future Sources Data repository/Data Lake Can handle just about any kind of data, including certain types of documents. Advanced Analysis Operational Reporting

Potential Pain Points Data Governance Consistency in Reporting What does all of his stuff MEAN? Who “owns” what? Consistency in Reporting What did we report last year? (Oh, we do it differently now…) Create a flexible standard vs. reinventing the wheel Sharing Knowledge IT: We need to learn a lot more about this data IR: We need access to these new systems and tools

At first: Shotgun Wedding Cultural challenges Knowledge space boundaries Less than total trust IR staff already have full-time jobs Misunderstanding of the others’ jobs

But eventually: Successful Partnership A project where both are stakeholders What is the “win” for each side? Approach it as a learning opportunity Have fun! If necessary, fake it ‘til you feel it. The Dashboard Team and the Maxwell Award.
