What’s for Lunch Sarah Coates Lucy Hay Fisher Rhoads Katie Dempsey Rose Young During the presentation introduce your app and your team members.

Introduction The Problem Kids all over struggle everyday making healthy choices for lunch because of not knowing basic nutrition and feeling that eating healthy is a chore. Social Impact People establish the majority of their eating habits when they're young, so the "What's for Lunch?" app is geared towards kids so that they can develop healthy eating habits that they'll carry with them throughout their life. Unit 4 | Lesson 19 | CS Discoveries

Scenario Elementary school kids all over struggle everyday making healthy choices for lunch because they do not know basic nutrition and they feel that eating healthy is a chore. What’s for Lunch app will provide kids with an opportunity for learning about nutrition in a fun environment. There will be some education (the food pyramid, the necessary food groups and amounts of those groups needed each day) but they will also be able to choose those healthy food options in a game environment too! Unit 4 | Lesson 19 | CS Discoveries

User Research The stakeholders of this app will be kids, ages 5 to 12. Focus group done with 22 3rd graders at Locust Grove Elementary. Kids have some prior knowledge of nutrition They thought the app would be helpful, even to adults. The kids play a lot of popular app games, wanted the game to be fun like Candy Crush. The kids said would download this type of app Unit 4 | Lesson 19 | CS Discoveries

Market Research Max's Plate - A game that allows children to drag food to their proper food group categories on the plate (which should look like a food group plate), it shows kids how to incorporate healthy food and their proportions into their meals. Awesome Eats - An interactive gardening game that shows where foods come from and then how they end up on our plates, the kids sort out the foods into health groups before putting them on the plate and making sure they choose healthy foods/drinks over non-healthy, and finally it teaches them how recycling and reusing can be done simply in everyday life. 5 A Day - This app is more for parents than kids, but it basically allows the parents to see what foods should be eaten daily so their child can have everything they need from the food pyramid. It guides them to make healthier choices thus leading to healthier meals for their children. Unit 4 | Lesson 19 | CS Discoveries

Sample Screens Unit 4 | Lesson 19 | CS Discoveries This slide is to show a few of the screens in more detail Example from Kristy Carpenter ‘16. Unit 4 | Lesson 19 | CS Discoveries

Demo Prior to the presentation, make sure your app is up and running in a different browser tab. During the presentation: show this slide, then switch to a demo of your app.

Pre recorded Demo Unit 4 | Lesson 19 | CS Discoveries This is a back up video of our demo in case we have trouble running the demo on the day of the presentation Unit 4 | Lesson 19 | CS Discoveries

User Feedback Feedback on the Low Fidelity Prototype Not clear how you get from opening screen to main menu (there’s no button on the splash screen) All of the other buttons go to the appropriate screens Feedback on the App The apple, milk, and chips are just buttons that say the word, they aren’t pictures Can’t drag and drop the food into the selection area In our initial version of the real app we were not able to implement pictures for the food or dragging and dropping the pictures. So users during our testing of the app noted that was a problem and we fixed it in the final version. Unit 4 | Lesson 19 | CS Discoveries

Future work Addition of background music and sounds More food items to choose from Adding recipes for each food to the app More information regarding vitamins and minerals More art and visual elements for the other pages in the app A way in which the elements can be accessed to go to the nutrition screens and added to the score without needing to press a key (better for use on phones) Unit 4 | Lesson 19 | CS Discoveries

Reflection Went well: Each team member did what they promised in their assigned roles. Difficult: Working remotely proved to be challenging Learned: We learned how to plan and implement a project, and we learned how to work together remotely Next Steps: Our overall goal for the app would not change, but we’d like to implement our future work.
