Paragraphs 2-4 The Body Paragraphs

Quick Review An argument essay has SIX paragraphs. The first paragraph is called the introduction paragraph and contains eight parts. This is the most important paragraph because it states your side of the argument and outlines the other five paragraphs of your essay.

The Outline of an Argument Essay Complete Essay Outline Thesis Statement: Sentence 8 of an Introduction Paragraph 1: Introduction Paragraph 2: Body Paragraph 1 First reason explained Paragraph 3: Body Paragraph 2 Second reason explained Paragraph 4: Body Paragraph 3 Third reason explained Paragraph 5: Counterclaim and Rebuttal Paragraph 6: Conclusion Facts indicate, people should recycle things because waste builds up in large landfills, animals will be protected, and it would reduce pollution.

Body Paragraph Format It is the same for all three body paragraphs. Each paragraph contains a different reason from your thesis. These paragraphs should contain a minimum of 6 sentences each. Add a fourth supporting detail whenever possible. Sentence 1: TW and claim plus first reason rephrased (in different words) TOPIC SENTENCE Sentence 2: Supporting detail 1 (background knowledge or paraphrased text from articles) Sentence 3: Supporting detail 2 Sentence 4: Supporting detail 3 Sentence 5: Evidence cited with last name in parentheses [ex. (Thompson)] Sentence 6: Conclusion statement Answers, “What is the point of this paragraph?”

To Look at the Format Another Way Thesis Reason 1 Detail 1 Detail 2 Detail 3 Reason 2 Reason 3 To Look at the Format Another Way Body Paragraph 1 Body Paragraph 2 Body Paragraph 3

Body Sentence 1: Topic Sentence TW and claim plus first reason rephrased Thesis Facts indicate, people should recycle things because waste builds up in large landfills, animals will be protected, and it would reduce pollution. Sentence 1 of Body 1 Essentially, individuals need to reuse resources due to discarded items overflowing enormous junk yards. Sentence 1 of Body 2 Additionally, the public ought to salvage materials as a result of wildlife being more secure. Sentence 1 of Body 3 Furthermore, society has a duty to reprocess goods whereas doing so would limit contamination.

Body Sentence 1: Topic Sentence TW and claim plus first reason rephrased Transition Words Body 1: Essentially, Body 2: Additionally, Body 3: Furthermore, Synonyms for “because” due to as a result of whereas thanks to Sentence 1 of Body 1 Essentially, individuals need to reuse resources due to discarded items overflowing enormous junk yards. Sentence 1 of Body 2 Additionally, the public ought to salvage materials as a result of wildlife being more secure. Sentence 1 of Body 3 Furthermore, society has a duty to reprocess goods whereas doing so would limit contamination.

Example THESIS STATEMENT: Cell phones are useful tools because they allow for instant communication, there is access to internet, and entertainment is available at all times. TOPIC SENTENCE FOR BODY PARAGRAPH 1: Cell phones are a valuable resource because they grant the ability to immediately communicate.

Try it out:. Read your thesis statement Try it out: * Read your thesis statement. Remove any “I,” “me,” “you,” “we,” etc. * Write a topic sentence for each of the magic 3 (the reasons why cell phones are a useful tool). REMEMBER: You have to change the wording of the BIG CLAIM each time!

Try it out Write this sentence a different way by replacing the underlined words. Don’t just pick any word from a thesaurus. Try to find the best word to use as a replacement. Citizens should show respect for soldiers protecting the country.

Continue trying it out…. Thesis Statement: Citizens should show respect for soldiers protecting the country because they are constantly risking their lives, they protect our freedom, and they love America. You have changed the beginning of the thesis statement already. Now….write the first reason why differently by changing the underlined words. “Citizens should show respect for soldiers protecting the country because they are constantly risking their lives. NOW…..add your sentence together. YOU HAVE CREATED A TOPIC SENTENCE!

Continue trying it out…. Now…… add your first part that you changed to the first reason.

Supporting Details: Background Knowledge or Paraphrased Text from Articles These sentences contain information you already know. For example, in a paragraph on playground hazards, you probably already know specific ways students get hurt on playgrounds. You could use these examples as supporting details. If you don’t know much about the topic, you pull information from the articles given with the essay prompt. YOU CANNOT DIRECTLY QUOTE THE ARTICLE HERE. Paraphrasing means to reword what you read in the article.

Body Supporting Details TW and claim plus first reason rephrased Sentence 1 of Body 1 Essentially, individuals need to reuse resources due to discarded items overflowing enormous junk yards. Sentence 1 of Body 2 Additionally, the public ought to salvage materials as a result of wildlife being more secure. Sentence 1 of Body 3 Furthermore, society has a duty to reprocess goods whereas doing so would limit contamination. Supporting Details of Body 1 Nearby landfills hurt homeowners Landfills take up a lot of space The beauty of the land is gone Supporting Details of Body 2 Fish and birds need clean water Floating plastic harms marine life Animals mistake trash for food Supporting Details of Body 3 Nonrecycled oil pollutes water Greenhouse gasses come from trash Chemicals seep into the ground

Evidence (at least one from the articles) Tips Example You can use your evidence sentence after any of the three supporting detail sentences. This can be directly quoted from the articles. Start with . . . “According to __________, . . .” “In an article by __________, the author states . . .” End with . . . The last name of the author in parentheses According to Gregory McNamee, “In November 2008 in Australia, a 10- foot-long crocodile tagged as part of a government wildlife-tracking program turned up dead, having consumed 25 plastic shopping and garbage bags” (McNamee). Notice the period goes AFTER the citation.

Conclusion Sentence You need a conclusion transition word here. 1st Body Paragraph: Therefore 2nd Body Paragraph: Thus 3rd Body Paragraph: Conclusively This is a rephrase of your topic sentence Use different words Topic Sentence: Additionally, the public ought to salvage materials as a result of wildlife being more secure Conclusion Sentence: Thus, living things will be safer without as much waste.
