Chemical Safety Compliance Training for Elementary (PreK-5) Welcome….blah blah---The following training information aligns with providing students with a safe learning environment as part of Richland One’s Framework for Success. Blah….. Chemical Safety Compliance Training for Elementary (PreK-5)

School Science Chemical Safety Checklist Completed by the school Science Safety Committee and scanned to either: kyreem.oakes@richlandone.org Or Kimberly.spivey@richlandone.org To protect our school faculty and students and to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and best practice procedures for hands-on investigations, explorations, and demonstrations, Richland One must comply with the following contents notated on this checklist. Our department compiled important information for you to make this compliance training as easy as possible. The checklist was developed for the school “Science Chemical Safety Team” to use to ensure that the mandatory regulations are adhered to. Please complete the checklist and all of the necessary components by the designated deadlines. We hope this training makes the process easier for you to administer and monitor. When the checklist is completed, scan it to kyreem.oakes@richlandone.org or kimberly.spivey@richlandone.org along with the signed training rosters.

Training Requirements 1 Ensure that ALL school faculty and staff, with the exception of custodial and cafeteria employees, complete the required GHS Training-The Right to Understand module by August 31, 2018; Course #21481 (GHS Certificate Training-Complete short 20 min. video with accompanying quiz.)

Certificate of Completion When each teacher completes the 20 minute video and passes the short quiz, they will receive a certificate like the one above. This certificate is valid for 3 years and must be placed in the teacher’s science chemical safety binder.

Training Requirements 2 Show this PowerPoint to science teachers (PreK-5) as part of their training. All teachers/staff who have watched the video, taken the quiz, and viewed this PowerPoint will need to sign the training roster. 3 Assemble Science Chemical Safety Notebooks for teachers of science in PreK-5, and keep in a visible location

School Science Notebook Components Ready to complete, hole-punch, and print… just need binders and teachers to help assemble!

Save PDF version to desktop Pages 4-23 will be the contents of each science teacher’s science safety notebook. Save PDF version to desktop Once the Chemical Safety Notebooks are assembled, each teacher must keep it in a visible and easily accessible location. In case of emergency, they will need to use the SDS to provide them with the necessary handling information. Teachers must also add the electronic version to their desktops for access to all KIT SDS Forms (unless printed and placed in their notebooks)

Cover Sheet This Cover Sheet begins the content for the notebooks. If the pages are blank, the team will need to complete the pages before they are copied, hole-punched, and assembled. Note: If the committee wants to make copies, hole-punch, and distribute, the teachers can assemble it themselves.

Table of Contents This will need to be completed before copies are made and distributed.

School Science Teacher Roster And Science Lab/Classroom locations We have attached a school roster form for your convenience. This roster should list all of your school’s science teachers/assistants who handle any chemical or material when conducting an investigation

(SDS) Example taken from FOSS Kits (Links provided) Safety Data Sheets (SDS) Example taken from FOSS Kits (Links provided) These are called Safety Data Sheets. Every chemical or material that has the potential to cause injury or harm has one. You have been provided a link to learn more about them, as well as links to ALL FOSS Kit and Carolina Biological (STC) Kits. Teachers may print them and place in their notebooks for the chemicals they use OR save the pdf version on their desktop for easy access. If the teacher chooses to use the electronic version, it is a good idea to pull up the page where the links are to ALL materials for FOSS or STC so that they have immediate information if necessary.

Kit Safety Data Sheet Links For your convenience, we have generated links that will direct you to the SDS for all chemicals/materials located in the kits. If you use a chemical/materials that is NOT in the kit, it is your responsibility to ensure that proper labeling and storage procedures occur. To support you with this, we have attached “Non-Kit” labels at the bottom of the safety guide. You will just need to print, attach, and store properly. Avery 5164 shipping labels are the template to use. If a chemical/material is used that is brought from home or another source (that could potentially cause any type of injury) the item must be labeled with the template label we have provided. If this item is continuously used, it must be stored following the same process as other materials or items. Example: If a teacher is using vinegar for an experiment, before they begin they must: label the container with the “Non-Kit” labels we have provided, locate a SDS for the item and place in their notebook OR display the SDS on their computer in case of an emergency. We know that teachers and staff are very careful, but having this critical information immediately available keeps you and your students safe and free from negligent behavior when dealing with potentially harmful materials.

It is important to become familiar with chemical hazard labels It is important to become familiar with chemical hazard labels. I will deconstruct this label so that you will understand what is on the label.
