Why are we here today?

To prepare yourself to be an effective member of an effective DEIC.

STEP ONE What is the DEIC?

Texas State Law establishes that: The District’s policy and procedures shall establish a District-level planning and decision-making committee that will: involve the professional staff of the district, parents, and community members; and establish and review the district's and campuses' educational plans, goals, performance objectives, and major classroom instructional programs §11.251(b) of the Texas Education Code

STEP TWO Who makes the rules?

Federal and state law along with local Board policy and administrative regulations determine the expectations and the rules for DEIC

STEP FOUR What are the rules?

DEIC Responsibilities Assist the Superintendent in the planning, operation, supervision, and evaluation of the District educational program Assist in the annual development, evaluation, and revision of the District improvement plan Analyze information related to dropout prevention, in accordance with BQA(Legal) §11.251(a) & (b) of the Texas Education Code

Meetings The board shall establish a procedure under which meetings are held regularly by district and campus-level planning and decision-making committees that include professional staff; parents of students enrolled in the district; business representatives; and community members. http://pol.tasb.org/Policy/Search/179?filter=bqa

Additional Provisions about Meetings The Board’s designee shall set its agenda and shall schedule at least four meetings per year. DEIC meetings shall be held outside of the school day; Additional meetings may be held at the call of the chairperson. NEISD BQA (Legal) & Board Policy BQA (Local)

Communication Measures to Involve the Broader Community The Superintendent or designee shall ensure that the DEIC obtains broad-based community, parent, and staff input and provides information to those persons on a systematic basis. Minutes of each meeting shall be distributed to DEIC members, all principals, and all PTA presidents. Minutes of each meeting shall be posted at each campus and at the Richard A. Middleton Education Center. Employees and the community at large shall receive information about the committee’s activities through District publications. NEISD Board Policy BQA (Local)
