Presentation transcript:

Would you like to take a trip to a very special place Would you like to take a trip to a very special place? A place where not many human beings have ever been? No, not to the moon. This place is right here on the earth. No, not the North Pole or the South Pole.

Let’s hope you’re adventurous because we’re going to take a trip to the bottom of the ocean! We’ll need a special ship. It’s called a bathyscaphe (a small research submarine). Our vessel will need a name.

Ocean Topography

Shall we go deeper. We’ve started out close to the shore Shall we go deeper? We’ve started out close to the shore. In these areas the sea bed, or floor of the ocean, slopes gently away from the shoreline stretching seaward, sometimes for hundreds of miles. These areas are called the continental shelves. It is where 90 PERCENT of sea life is found.

sea snail BROTULID 20,000 FT DEEP – Below 40 °F The greatest depths lie along the margins of the Pacific Ocean. They are long linear gashes known as trenches. We’re at 33,000 feet (almost seven miles deep—a lot deeper than a swimming pool!) Believe it or not there is life here also. In 1960, a sighting was recorded at 33,793 feet by Jacques Piccard in his bathyscaphe named “Trieste”, of a sole-like fish or perhaps a sea cucumber. Our temperature is just at the freezing point.

Glassfish Garfish or needlefish

Ice fish Eels climbing a waterfall Climbing Perch crawl on land using gills and can live up to six days on land.

Some fish are acrobats. Garfishes can leap almost vertically out of the water. A cusheel can stand on its tail. The indostomus can move its head sideways and up and down! The hagfish can tie itself up in a knot! There are electric fishes that can actually discharge an electric current. The black electric ray can produce a current of 200 volts—enough to stun small crustaceans and the fish they feed on.

Alaska Blackfish start out small and grow to be huge.

We almost forgot the whales We almost forgot the whales. Well, first of all, whales are mammals, not fish (primarily because they nourish their young with milk). The most striking characteristic of a whale is its huge size. The blue whale can grow to reach a length of 100 feet and weigh up to 150 tons. Its heart can be the size of a compact car! It is by far the largest animal created by God—even larger than dinosaurs.

Who wants to swim with a whale? What marvelous creatures there are roaming the seas!
