Sherman’s March to the Sea Took place in Atlanta, Georgia From November 15 until December 21, 1864, Union General William T. Sherman led some 60,000 soldiers on a 285-mile march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia. The purpose of this “March to the Sea” was to scare the people of Georgia. Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse On April 9, 1865 Robert E. Lee surrendered his army of Northern Virginia in a little village called Appomattox Courthouse. Lee surrendered formally to Ulysses S. Grant. The North wins the Civil War!
African-Americans in the War Frederick Douglass encouraged other African Americans to join the Union n army. African-Americans joined the Union army because they supported Lincoln. They were paid less than white soldiers and had to buy their own uniforms. The first group of all black troops against the Confederacy in South Carolina was the 54th regiment. Overall, 200,000 African-Americans fought for the Union and over 37,000 died. Later, in June 1864 Congress passed a bill that stated black and white Union soldiers would receive equal pay.
