Overview New Form factors and Features Performance / User Interface Server Synchronization Wireless - New Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Options TCP/IP Enhancements Inbox Enhancements Security – VPN Support and Digital Certificates Developer Differences

New Form Factors and Features Now available in small, medium and large size units. Integrated Wireless – Wi-Fi / Bluetooth. Keyboard Shortcut Support – Faster data entry.

Performance / User Interface Overall the Pocket PCs feel faster and more responsive. The Compact .NET framework runs faster. User Interface Less obtrusive Bubble Notifications – including the low power message.

Server Synchronization Exchange 2003/Mobile Information Server Synchronization Built In Ability to schedule synchronization – IE: every 15 minutes. Ability to configure the server to send an SMS message to request it to initiate synchronization. Real Time Communications Server support in Messenger

Wireless Wi-Fi Zero Configuration – makes connecting to different Wi-Fi hotspots quick and easy – includes 802.1x support, some vendors such as HP now include EAP-TLS or PEAP support Bluetooth Configuration Standardization – However HP does not use it. Phone Edition now stays connected all the time via GPRS / 1xRTT - There’s no option to disconnect Separate volume control for phone calls vs. system sounds.

TCP/IP Enhancements Windows Mobile 2003 Supports IPv6 - it’s ready to connect to the latest networks as well as existing IPv4 networks. Configuration of connectivity settings can be completed using .CAB files or over the air using XML. The file format is documented so you can create standard connections for users as part of a rollout. Connection Manager now provides a method to route data for hosts between the internet and work.

Inbox Enhancements VCard / VCal Support. Ability to configure Inbox to check for e-mail on a single account periodically. Inbox now supports signatures. Better support for HTML e-mail – launches Pocket IE to view it.

Security Microsoft has added more security features to Windows Mobile 2003 VPN Supports PPTP and IPSEC (L2TP) including 3rd party servers. Support for installable root and personal certificates. HP is the only vendor that offers a utility to install certificates. Digital certificates supported with Pocket IE, Mobile Information Server/Exchange 2003. Still lacks the ability to prevent users from storing passwords or deleting them once they are stored. VPN – PPTP support still limited to Microsoft servers while IPSEC supported by vendors like Cisco. You can install digital certificates by copying them to your Pocket PC and clicking on them

Developer Differences Microsoft bundles the Compact .NET Framework in rom. Microsoft dropped bundling the Visual Basic Runtime so users must install it. Microsoft still supports applications created with the MFC – runtime in rom. Still need to install SQL ServerCE. eMbedded Tools v4 required to specifically target the Windows Mobile 2003 Existing apps run fine so if you need to support both then just continue developing using eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0
