Warm Up #5 What are three examples of technology? How has technology helped civilizations to advance?

Technology and the Design Process Lesson 1: Tools of Technology

Essential Questions How are science and technology connected? What technological resources are needed to create new technologies?

Technology Technology – the application of scientific knowledge to benefit people Includes everything we design and use to get things done Look at the pictures on the next slide Discuss with your table the order of these pictures from the oldest version to the newest version How has technology changed over time? What benefits have come from this change?

Changing Technology

Science and Technology New scientific information can lead to new products or processes Ex: steam engines lead to modern trains Science depends on technology and technology depends on science Technology has to observe the principles of science Why do some technological solutions, like the bullet train, take years to develop? How might advancements in science affect technology?

Technology Resources Developing technology requires knowledge, skills, raw materials, tools, and energy What is one way you use technology? How do people impact the development of technology?

Technology Resources Resource – a source of supply or support Include the following: People – have skills – an ability you develop when you combine knowledge and practice in order to preform an activity well The skills are used to convert ideas into real products or processes Machines – devices that make doing work easier Materials Information – can lead to knowledge, learning, and understanding Capital – money, credit, property, or accumulated wealth Energy – the ability to cause change Tools – devices that increase the ability to do work Time

Technology Resources Why do companies need capital? What might happen if enough time is not given to the design of a new product? Copy and fill in the graphic organizer listing the resources needed for technology. Include examples of each.
