SMALL NAKED PORTRAIT Lucian Freud BORN 1922 1973-74 Freud always describes his nudes as portraits and this is certainly a specific person, remarkably alive and vital despite her shut eyes and foetal hunch. Freud lingers on what is particular: the reddened hand against white breast, the dusty sole of her right foot and her hair across her forehead. Freud has said, ‘I would wish my portraits to be of the people, not like them. Not having a look of the sitter, being them. I didn’t want to get just a likeness like a mimic, but to portray them, like an actor … As far as I am concerned the paint is the person: I want it to work for me just as flesh”.
