Prelude for Worship Martha Short
Welcome Daniel Palmer
Higher Ground CCLI #606984
I’m pressing on the upward way New heights I’m gaining every day Still praying as I onward bound “Lord, plant my feet On higher ground”
Lord, lift me up and let me stand By faith, on heaven’s tableland A higher plane than I have found Lord, plant my feet On higher ground
My heart has no desire to stay Where doubts arise And fears dismay Though some may dwell Where these abound My prayer My aim is higher ground
Lord, lift me up and let me stand By faith, on heaven’s tableland A higher plane than I have found Lord, plant my feet On higher ground
I want to live above the world Though Satan’s darts At me are hurled For faith has caught The joyful sound The song of saints On higher ground
Lord, lift me up and let me stand By faith, on heaven’s tableland A higher plane than I have found Lord, plant my feet On higher ground
I want to scale the utmost height And catch a gleam of glory bright But still I ‘ll pray Till heaven I’ve found “Lord, lead me on To higher ground”
Lord, lift me up and let me stand By faith, on heaven’s tableland A higher plane than I have found Lord, plant my feet On higher ground CCLI #606984

He leadeth me O blessed thought Whate'er I do Where-e'er I be O words with heavenly Comfort fraught Whate'er I do Where-e'er I be Still 'tis God's hand That leadeth me
He leadeth me He leadeth me By His own hand He leadeth me His faithful follower I would be For by His hand He leadeth me
Sometimes 'mid scenes Of Deepest gloom Sometimes where Eden's Bowers bloom By waters still O'er troubled sea Still 'tis His hand that leadeth me
He leadeth me He leadeth me By His own hand He leadeth me His faithful follower I would be For by His hand He leadeth me
And when my task On earth is done When by Thy grace The vict'ry's won E'en death's cold wave I will not flee Since God through Jordan leadeth me
He leadeth me He leadeth me By His own hand He leadeth me His faithful follower I would be For by His hand He leadeth me © Public Domain Joseph H. Gilmore / William B. Bradbury CCLI #606984

We Give Our Tithes and Offerings
Across The Lands Sanctuary Choir
Every star and every planet You're the Word of God the Father From before the World began Every star and every planet Has been fashioned By Your hand
All creation holds together By the power of Your voice Let the skies Declare Your glory Let the land and Seas rejoice
You're the author of creation You're the Lord of every man And Your cry of Love rings out Across the lands
For the anguish of a cross Yet You left the Gaze of angels Came to seek and Save the lost And exchanged The joy of heaven For the anguish of a cross
That the guilty may go free With a prayer You Fed the hungry With a word You Stilled the sea Yet how silently You suffered That the guilty may go free
You're the author of creation You're the Lord of every man And Your cry of Love rings out Across the lands
And ascended into heaven With a shout You Rose victorious Wresting victory From the grave And ascended into heaven Leading captives In Your wake
Interceding for Your own Now You stand Before the Father Interceding for Your own From each tribe and Tongue and nation You are leading Sinners home
J o n a h 3 But it greatly displeased Jonah and he became angry. 2 He prayed to the Lord and said, “Please Lord, was not this what I said while I was still in my own country? Therefore in order to forestall this I fled to Tarshish, for I knew that You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, and one who relents concerning calamity.
J o n a h 3 3 Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for death is better to me than life.” 4 The Lord said, “Do you have good reason to be angry?” 5 Then Jonah went out from the city and sat east of it. There he made a shelter for himself and sat under it in the shade until he could see what would happen in the city.
J o n a h 3 6 So the Lord God appointed a plant and it grew up over Jonah to be a shade over his head to deliver him from his discomfort. And Jonah was extremely happy about the plant. 7 But God appointed a worm when dawn came the next day and it attacked the plant and it withered.
J o n a h 3 8 When the sun came up God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah’s head so that he became faint and begged with all his soul to die, saying, “Death is better to me than life.” 9 Then God said to Jonah, “Do you have good reason to be angry about the plant?” And he said, “I have good reason to be angry, even to death.”
J o n a h 3 10 Then the Lord said, “You had compassion on the plant for which you did not work and which you did not cause to grow, which came up overnight and perished overnight. 11 Should I not have compassion on Nineveh, the great city in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know the difference between their right and left hand, as well as many animals?”
The Burning Grace of God Jonah demonstrates the foolishness of trying to get in the way of God’s compassion.
The Burning Grace of God To enjoy God’s grace:
The Burning Grace of God 1. We must not angrily limit God’s grace to those we are comfortable with God saving (1–3).
The Burning Grace of God Jonah is burning mad because the Ninevites escaped God’s burning wrath.
The Burning Grace of God “Jonah’s wrath burns hot enough that he is ready to sit in judgment over the judge of the universe” (Cary, 129).
The Burning Grace of God What if God has left us here for those who are opposed to us?
The Burning Grace of God 2. We must not have more regard for earthly comforts or preferences than the eternal destiny of others (4–10).
The Burning Grace of God Do you have good reason to be angry? (4) This is the question God asks each of us who only want the comforts of being God’s children but none of the challenges that come with His Great Commission.
The Burning Grace of God In the Bible, east is the direction of the disobedient.
The Burning Grace of God Jonah waits for God to burn up Nineveh, but God brings the heat to Jonah.
The Burning Grace of God Jonah may not like God’s compassion toward Nineveh, but he sure does like God’s shade. In an instant he moves from great displeasure (1) to great joy (6) not because a city has been saved but because He has some shade.
The Burning Grace of God I wonder how often we assume we are under enemy attack, when in truth, God is simply getting our attention, prying us from our reliance upon earthly comforts that can prevent us joining in God’s mission?
The Burning Grace of God “In the Bible, east wind is bad news.” -Philip Cary
The Burning Grace of God Our spiritual maturity is revealed by what makes us angry and what gives us joy.
The Burning Grace of God 3. We must not fight against God’s will to save (10–11).
The Burning Grace of God God always gets the last Word.
The Burning Grace of God God silences Jonah, and Jonah’s silence speaks volumes.

In the land that is plentiful Blessed be Your name In the land that is plentiful Where Your streams Of abundance flow
And blessed be Your name Through the wilderness When I'm found In the desert place Though I walk Through the wilderness Blessed be Your name
Every blessing You pour out And when the darkness closes in Lord I'll turn back to praise And when the darkness closes in Lord Still I will say
Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your glorious name Blessed be Your name Blessed be Your glorious name
Blessed be Your name When the sun's Shining down on me When the world's All as it should be
And blessed be Your name On the road Marked with suffering Though there's pain In the offering Blessed be Your name
Every blessing You pour out And when the darkness closes in Lord I'll turn back to praise And when the darkness closes in Lord Still I will say
Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your glorious name Blessed be Your name Blessed be Your glorious name
My heart will choose to say, Lord You give and take away My heart will choose to say, Lord Blessed be Your name

Bowing here I find my rest And without You I fall apart Lord I come - I confess Bowing here I find my rest And without You I fall apart You're the one that guides my heart
My one defense my righteousness Lord I need You – oh, I need You Every hour I need You My one defense my righteousness Oh God how I need You
Where grace is found is where You are And where You are Lord I am free Where sin runs deep Your grace is more Where grace is found is where You are And where You are Lord I am free Holiness is Christ in me Where You are Lord I am free
So teach my song to rise to You When temptation comes my way And when I cannot stand I'll fall on You Jesus You're my hope and stay
