How to ATTACK Problems Facing 3G Wireless Communication Systems Sridhar Rajagopal ECE Dept. Rice University

Motivation People want to use better wireless communication systems with higher data rates, supporting more users and providing a certain QoS while : having a lower power handset with a smaller size but a larger display

How Do I ATTACK this Problem

Better Algorithms Push Towards Lower BER Maintain certain QoS At the Algorithm Level Better Algorithms Coding & Decoding Detection Using Other Diversity Techniques Push Towards Lower BER Maintain certain QoS

At the Implementation Level Base-Station Mobile Handset ISSUES : IT’s DIFFERENT!

Throughput,Throughput and more Throughput! Size - No BAR Base-Station Throughput,Throughput and more Throughput! Size - No BAR Display - No BAR Power - No BAR

Mobile Handset Power Size Display Throughput “ This is what the Consumer sees of 3G Wireless Communications”

Push Complexity Towards the Base-Station IDEA Push Complexity Towards the Base-Station [aka all the multi-’s] Make Mobile Handset as {simple, sleek, smart, soon, supple} as possible (ASAP)

Work Done So Far DSP Channel Estimation Multiuser Detection [DSPFEST’99] Meeting Third Generation Requirements [Asilomar’99]

Coming Up Next (only on the RENÉ) FPGA’s [Xilinx] ASIC’s [Cadence] Multiprocessor Boards [Sundance] Making Algorithms suitable for Implementation Low Power Issues

NOW WHAT???

Proposed Base-Station Implementation TI's Wireless Basestation (http://www.ti.com/sc/docs/psheets/diagrams/basestat.htm)

Problems with Base-station C6203 only for Channel Enc. & Dec. [No Multiuser Detection] Multiuser Detection not possible on a single DSP. Task Partitioning and Pipelining required [on the lines of Asilomar’99] Multi-processing Element Solution to meet Real-time.

Mobile Handset TI's Wireless Handset Solution (http://www.ti.com/sc/graphics/apps/wireless/bdiagram.gif)

Problems with Mobile Handset Run it on SOLAR Energy Minimize Size ATTACK units that consume maximum power Apply Power Reduction Techniques at all possible layers Make it COOL!

Future Directions Optimal Hardware Mapping Uplink/Downlink m FPGA’s n DSP’s o ASIC’s p GPP’s Making Algorithms suitable for Implementation Reconfigurability ???

Complexity - BER Tradeoff. Future Directions Comparing Different Types of Detectors Suitable for Implemention {Diff. Algorithms} Complexity - BER Tradeoff.
