Attack off 9 Thanks to Dave Butcher for his Technical Support 111

Technique and attitude - Create the attitude on the training field Work off the ball early (get into position) Beat the man mentality (win the collisions) Situational footwork Clarity of roles Footwork and body managment 222 Technique

Philosophy - Generate go forward Take away defensive line speed Generate useable 3 second ball Keep the ball through multiple phases (create pressure) 333

Principals Work off the ball at speed Early communication Identify space and attack it Work to the outside shoulder of the defender Set your width in attack (not dictated by the defence) Communication – who talks to who, specific words Footwork, body height, leg drive Beat the man mentality 444

Roles and responsibilities JACK - Primary role is to clear out and support the lead runner. It is essential that this player wins the space over the ball or attacks the tackler/hunt Forward pods Roles and responsibilities KING- Primary role is to use your footwork to get to the outside of the defender and get through the line of defense. Ruck QUEEN- Primary role is to support the lead runner and take away secondary threats. This player will also be the ”tip” option L-Line – running line when running off of 9 , outside hand initiates the turning of the hips up field, we always are on the move so timing is key to being successful. EXPRESS – forward pod must always have an express option connected to it. This will be primarily a mid field player

Terminology – Examples of specific language (common language is crucial) Fire – verbal cue that the caller wants the ball Power –Call from support to ball carrier to take the ball on and drive Deck – Call from the support to go to ground Tip – Call from Queen for short pass from King (king is in motion) Shift –Call from Queen for early pass from King (king is static, Queen then becomes primary runner) Dig – Call from support player that they are on an offloading line 666

Movement Movement: Coming round the corner Queen will be the first player round the corner and will be push out by King King will be the second player round the corner and will communicate that he is there to the Queen to allow them to push into position Jack is the third man round the corner It is imperative that as a minimum we work to get the Jack and King in place at all times. We always need the ability to clear at the contact area Express option = Call from the 1st receiver that he/she wants the ball. Scrum half to pass behind the forwards running through 777

If we breach the line we must have urgency to get to the ball carrier Tip on option: King runner is still working to the outside shoulder. Options for the pass: Pass early (shift) – call from Queen support runner to pass early to change the point of contact Pass before the collision (tip) – King runner gets to the outside of the tackler and gives a short pass prior to the collision to the Queen runner coming onto the ball at pace. Jack runner must assess the situation in front of them and make decisions on role – eg King takes in = win space over the ball/take away threats, king tips = work to clear on the inside of the Queen If we breach the line we must have urgency to get to the ball carrier 888
