Engaging Line of Business Leaders into RRI Emad Yaghmaei Delft University of Technology
Common Challenges to Adopting RRI Practices Importance “RRI is not relevant for us. I know no other leader in my field who’s done this.” “No way, this is in conflict with our goals.” Strategy “That’s a change of strategy. It’s not in my goals. My manager must approve first.” “I am not paid to do this.” Urgency “I understand it is important, but we first must solve this much bigger acute problem.” Ability/Resources “I’d love to help, but we don’t have the skills, headcount, or budget.”
Engagement Tactics Connect the responsible and sustainable business case to existing KPIs of the team/project/company. Highlight relevant moves from responsibility leaders or competitors. Internally promote wins created with a team that willingly engaged. Leverage (or even create) a compelling event to engage. Additionally, engage peers, direct reports, grassroots teams, and so on. Educate the team through workshops, newsletters, and so on. You can not improve what you can not measure.
Examples: Connecting the RRI Business case to the CFO’s KPIs Stock price (RRI) reporting (Socially responsible) investor relations Margin Business cases for specific initiatives Risk Safety, supply chain risk, and brand risk
