Things to know April 22,1451 – November 26, 1504 Known as: Isabella of Castile and Aragon and Isabella the Catholic Married to Ferdinand II of Aragon Basis for unification of Spain Father died in 1454 In early life, Isabella lived with her brother and mother in an old castile in poor conditions Extremely educated Taught herself Latin Gave birth to 5 children but only 3 lived Their names were Isabella, John, Joan, Maria, and Catherine

About her children John died in 1497 Isabella became Queen of Portugal, but died in 1498 while giving birth & her son later died at the age of 3 Catherine married King Henry VIII of England, but he divorced her when she was unable to produce a make heir. Joan, who was inherit to the throne, became crazy.

Interesting Facts Only bathed twice in her life-once when she was a baby and once before her wedding She was the first Isabella to become queen At first, didn’t except the crown of nobles 1482, Ferdinand and Isabella waged a war to conquer Granada Set up a palace school for the sons of nobility Supported learning among women Sponsored Christopher Columbus’s voyage to America Educated her sons and daughters( which was very rare at the time) First women to become featured on the U.S Commemorative in 1893
