Cell Membrane Notes

Objective Describe the function of the cell membrane.

Vocabulary Cell membrane Phospholipid Fluid mosaic model Selective permeability

Cell Membrane Forms a boundary between a cell and the outside environment and controls the passage of materials into and out of the cell.

Phospholipid A molecule composed of three basic parts: A charged phosphate group Glycerol Two fatty acid chains (figure on board)

The cell membrane is made of two phospholipid layers embedded with other molecules, such as proteins, carbohydrates, and cholesterol. (figure on board)

Fluid Mosaic Model Model that describes the arrangement and movement of the molecules that make up a cell membrane.

Selective Permeability Semipermeable; Condition or quality of allowing some, but not all, materials to cross a barrier or membrane.

A selectively permeable, or semipermeable, membrane allows some, but not all, molecules to cross. (Figure on board)
