Importance of the Writing Processes

Science fiction writer Why Process Writing? You don't start out writing good stuff. You start out writing crap and thinking it's good stuff, and then gradually you get better at it. That's why I say one of the most valuable traits is persistence.” ― Octavia E. Butler Science fiction writer

Follow these steps!

Step 1: Prewriting PREWRITING STRATEGIES Planning: Selecting Topics, Generating Ideas, Organizing Ideas. Determining Purpose, Audience and Writing form. Procedures: Think, Brainstorm, Create web Maps, List Ideas, Make Notes, Outline Important Points or Read related information.

Step 2: Drafting DRAFTING STRATEGIES PROCEDURES: Putting Prewriting ideas into writing Reading and Rereading to see if it makes sense. Conferencing with teacher and peers to discuss and review writing. PROCEDURES: Having writing materials, get ideas down, concentrate on meaning and content, skip lines and write on one side of the page, circle unfamiliar words, label “work in progress” or follow prewriting organizer.

Step 3: Revising Revising Strategy: Marking content changes discussed during conference(s). Revising Procedures: Discussion with peer and/ or teacher Reread, reword, rewrite for clearer meaning. Use self revising checklist.

How do we Edit? Our students need to know that This... Has to go through this...

Step 4: Editing Editing Strategies: Making punctuation, capitalization, grammar, and spelling corrections. Conferencing with teacher or peers to proof read and edit. Editing Procedures: Reread, check spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar. Proof read Use peer editing and / or self editing checklist.

Step 5: Sharing / Publishing Publish Strategies: Preparing and sharing writing on a regular basis. Publishing Procedures: Display for others to read in class or school Read work to others Write to others (eg. pen pal) Make your own book Write for class newsletter, local newspaper, or children’s magazines Write reports or plays to present/ read to class.
