Presentation transcript:

The moralist, Jew or Gentile, is without excuse. Romans 2 The moralist, Jew or Gentile, is without excuse.

All have sinned… This person does what he judges in others. God demonstrates kindness to everyone. The hard hearted is storing up God’s wrath. God will judge us by our deeds. The work of the law is written on the heart of everyone. Knowledge of the Jewish law does not mean obedience. Outward behaviour does not guarantee inward goodness.

1. This person does what he judges in others. Romans 2:1-3, Matthew 7:1-3 For the unbeliever: Do you follow your own standards? For the believer: Take the beam out of your own eye before trying to take it out of another’s.

2. God demonstrates kindness to everyone. Romans 2:4, Matt 5:45, Acts 14:15-17 For the unbeliever: Understand the purpose of God’s goodness. For the believer: Show God’s kindness to all; b) Don’t misinterpret God’s kindness.

3. The hard hearted is storing up God’s wrath. Romans 2:5, Hebrews 3:7, 12; 4:7 For the unbeliever: Piling up the wrath of God. For the believer: Laying up treasures in heaven.

4. God will judge us by our deeds. Romans 2: 6-11, John 5:28-29; For the unbeliever: Your only hope to escape the judgment of God is salvation in Christ. Christ died for our sins. Revelation 20:11-19 For the believer: Be thankful for the grace of God. God will judge our works. 2 Corinthians 5:10

5. The work of the law is written on the heart of everyone. Romans 2:12-16 For the unbeliever: There is forgiveness in Christ for a guilty conscience. For the believer: Do not think of uniformed unbelievers as if they were animals with no conscience. Everyone is made in the image of God and has an innate knowledge of God.

5 cont. : verses on the conscience 1 Timothy 1:5 The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 1 Timothy 1:19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, 1 Timothy 4:2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, Titus 1:15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled. Hebrews 10:22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 1 Corinthians 8:10 For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol's temple, will he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols?

6. Knowledge of the Jewish law does not mean obedience. Romans 2:17-24 For the unbeliever: Religious heritage doesn’t necessarily mean salvation. For the believer: Our privilege ought to lead to good works. Does it?

7. Outward behaviour does not guarantee inward goodness. Romans 2:25-29 For the unbeliever: Religion without regeneration of the Spirit of God is worthless. For the believer: Are we empowered by the Spirit of God?
