When they arrived in the U.S. in 1964, they looked Like “respectable young men” Singing innocent sounding Songs. That gradually began To change and the 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band became an anthem For the Counterculture Movement The Beatles broke Up in 1970.

Mass Media Makes Counterculture Mainstream Movies, TV shows, Song Lyrics, News Coverage Greater Sexual Permissiveness (R and PG versions) More coverage of explicit violence “Bad Words” become acceptable Charles Manson Led Commune Followers listened to him Killed 7 people Still in Prison The MASH movie (1970) about the Korean War was raunchy and provocative. The TV Show (1972 – 1983) was tamer, but still had an edge to it compared to TV of the 50’s and 60’s 1969 Movie included Drug Use, Communes, and Popularization of Hippie Lifestyle TV Shows like The Brady Bunch made counterculture clothing mainstream

What did the average American think of the Counterculture Movement? Didn’t like it at all Voted for conservatives (Nixon) that promised to take action against them.
