DOE MIE The LSST Camera
LSSTCam Integration and Test (MIE I&T) LSST Camera I&T Manager Also planning commissioning 3.08.02 – Test Systems Equipment needed to test that requirements are met 3.08.03 – Cryostat Integration Loading of RAFTs (sensors) into the cryostat with testing Ends with fully populated cryostat with utilities (UT) 3.08.04 – Camera Body Integration Physical integration of the camera Ends with loaded cryostat and optics integration and final verification testing 3.08.05 – Camera Shipping Container 3.08.06 – DOE ComCam deliverables FY14-18 FY18-19 FY18-20
MIE 3.08.02 Camera I&T: Test Fixtures All of the I&T fixtures are also delivered to LSST Final I&T test uses Camera Calibration Optical Bench (CCOB) CCOB is primary reverification tool during commissioning
MIE 3.08.03 Camera I&T: Cryostat Integration Loading of RAFTs (sensors) into Cryostat Electro/optical testing (requirements verification) RAFT Integration Bench for Optical Test (BOT)
MIE 3.06.04 Camera I&T: Camera Integration Integration of Camera Body and Mechanisms Ends with loaded cryostat being integrated and final optics integration and alignment Fully verified “Camera Ready to Ship” defines the end of I&T MIE continues to CD-4 This I&T activity also part of Summit Reverification This I&T activity also part of Summit Reverification

Phase 0 Camera Summit Maintenance Facility Preparation
Camera Summit Preparation Commissioning Planning, Preparation… Phase 0 The most DOE-centric activity is WBS 06C.02.02.02 DOE outfits these rooms with tools, fixtures, etc Reference Travis Lange presentation(s) for how these areas are used in commissioning (and operations)
Camera Summit Preparation Commissioning Planning, Preparation… Phase 0 The summit facility has a camera maintenance facility. The DOE populates this area with fixtures from Camera I&T. Three areas of this facility are Class 10,000 clean room Cryostat servicing area (+ComCam) Class 100,000 white room Camera servicing area (+ComCam) Camera Staging and Test area Near the mirror recoating facility Full camera testing and servicing Tools, clean room consumables, M&S need to be procured, clean room operations implemented and preparations for camera I&T fixtures
3rd Floor Camera Maintenance Facility White Room Camera Staging and Test Area Clean Room Utility Area Walkway Mirror Coating Facility
Phase 1 ComCam
ComCam Early System AI&T Phase 1 Jacques Sebag will cover ComCam in detail ComCam is a joint DOE/NSF camera that allows an early start for commissioning of: Telescope and Site, Camera Data Management ComCam is a large portion of the DOE effort in WBS ..03
Camera Refrigeration Pathfinder Early System AI&T Phase 1 ComCam also has a camera refrigeration pathfinder WBS 06C.02.03.03 Refrigeration ground support equipment (compressors etc) need to be installed for ComCam (Note: ComCam is not cooled using camera refrigeration) Refrigeration Lines
ComCam Early System AI&T Phase 1 06C.02.03.04 – ComCam goes onto the telescope 06C.02.03.05 – DMS + TCS/OCS + ComCam AI&T The Commissioning Camera (ComCam) is designed to commission all camera functionality In this phase LSST is commissioning CCS OCS DAQ DM Telemetry Subsystem Interfaces Performance Optimization & Characterization
Phase 2 LSST Camera
Camera Shipping, Receiving & Reverification Full System AI&T Phase 2 This is the most DOE/Camera centric WBS element 06C.02.04.01 Reference Travis Lange presentation Ship Camera from SLAC to Summit (LCA-nnnnn) Camera Unpack Reinstall L1/L2 – realign Functionality verified Camera Reverification (LCA-nnnnn)
Camera Shipping, Receiving & Reverification Full System AI&T Phase 2 Repeat of final phases of camera I&T on summit Fully verified camera ready to go onto the telescope This I&T activity also part of Summit Reverification This I&T activity also part of Summit Reverification
Fully verified camera ready to go onto the telescope
LSST Camera Full System AI&T Phase 2 06C.02.04.02 – LSSTCam goes onto the telescope 06C.02.04.03 – DMS+ TCS/OCS + Cam. Integration In this phase LSST is commissioning CCS OCS DAQ DM Telemetry Subsystem Interfaces Performance Optimization & Characterization Just as we did with ComCam!
DOE Phase Transition As the LSST Camera is operating well on the telescope the technical commissioning efforts are winding down Technical expertise needed for operations must be maintained Technical expertise needed to maintain the camera will need to be retained at the labs Transition to operations ongoing
Phase 3 Science Verification
Science! Science Verification Phase 3 Reference Keith Bechtol presentation on SV
Commissioning Phase 1, 2 and 3 After technical commissioning succeeds with ComCam, a period of intense sky observation follows. DOE scientific staff are heavily involved in this phase. After technical commissioning succeeds with LSSTCam, a period of intense sky observation follows. DOE scientific staff are heavily involved in this phase. Science Verification consists of two periods of intense sky observation follow. DOE scientific staff are heavily involved in this phase. Operations! Reference Beth Willman presentation
Summary We have developed a single integrated LSST commissioning plan and schedule The DOE and NSF are partners in this endeavor DOE activities and responsibilities are captured at the activity level
