September 2017 Objective: Journal: To describe the locations and functions of selected organs To understand how tissues combine to form organs and how organs combine to form organ systems Journal: List the three types of muscular tissue and their functions.

Organs Requirement Know the function and location of each of the following: Liver Gallbladder Spleen Stomach Pancreas Small Intestines Large Intestines Kidney Ureter Urethra Urinary Bladder Diaphragm Lungs Heart Bronchi Trachea Larynx Pharynx Esophagus Brain Spinal Cord Thyroid

Organ Systems Group of organs that perform more functions than any one organ alone

Integumentary System Skin: largest and most important organ in the integumentary system Also includes hair, nails, sweat glands Functions: protection and regulation of body temperature

Skeletal System Includes bones, cartilage, ligaments, joints Functions: Support and Protection Storage for minerals such as Calcium and Phosphorus Formation of blood cells in the red marrow of certain bones

Muscular System Muscles Function: Movement, body posture, shape, generate heat

Nervous System Brain, Spinal Cord, Nerves Function: Communication between body functions Control of body functions Recognition and response to stimuli Functions are controlled by nerve impulses

Endocrine System Glands that secrete hormones Function: Produce and secrete hormones Communication Control and regulate metabolism Fluid and electrolyte balance Acid-base balance

Lymphatic System Lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels, tonsils, thymus, spleen Functions: Movement of large molecules Involved in the functioning of the immune system Lymph is composed of lymphocytes (function in the immune system), proteins, and fatty molecules

Circulatory System Heart, arteries, veins, capillaries Functions: Transportation of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, and hormones Regulates body temperature

Respiratory System Nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs, alveoli Function: Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide Irritants removed Regulates acid-base balances

Digestive System Organs - esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, gallbladder, pancreas Functions: Proper digestion of food Absorb nutrients Eliminate solid waste

Urinary System Kidneys, ureter, bladder, urethra Functions: Clean blood Maintain acid-base, electrolyte, and water balances Produces and releases urine Electrolytes are charged ions used to carry electral impulses across cells

Reproductive System Different organs based on sex Function: Ovaries and testes Function: Ensures the survival of a species Production of hormones permit development of reproductive system
