Reconstruction Amendments (I Do) During Reconstruction, three amendments were added to the Constitution. The Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery throughout the United States, was ratified in 1865. Southern states had to accept the end of slavery but quickly passed “Black Codes,” based on older slave codes. Congress passed The Civil Rights Act in response to the Black Codes. This law was later written as the Fourteenth Amendment. The 15th Amendment was ratified in 1870.
