ATHLETIC PROGRAM ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT 2016 - 2017

Athletics Milford Public Schools offer students at both high schools the opportunity to participate in 24 sports that are sanctioned by the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) Great care and consideration is given to ensure equity between the Athletic programs at both schools. This report is a general review of the finances of the Athletic programs for the 2016-2017 school year.

Athletics In addition to the 24 CIAC sanctioned sports, MPS also offers other opportunities for athletic related participation. A few of these are Unified Sports, Powder Puff, and Fencing Club.

Unified Sports Registered Program of Special Olympics Partners student athletes with and without intellectual disabilities for training and competition Runs throughout the school year at the high schools and middle school levels Competition in soccer, basketball, volleyball, softball, wiffle ball and bowling Approximately 50 – 60 students participate

Powder Puff An annual event, rather than an organized sport. Girls flag football game held annually the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Up to of 50 girls each from Foran and Law participate. A great source of fun and pride for participants, the schools, and the community. Costs of the event are paid for by the game’s gate receipts.

Athletic Finances The Athletic Programs are paid for through two funds: General Fund Athletic Activities Account Both funds carefully monitored and subject to the annual audit required by law.

General Fund The General Funds for athletics are a part of the Board of the Education Budget and generally cover items like: Coaches salaries Transportation Athletic trainers Insurance Equipment and supplies Uniforms

Athletic Activities Account Funds in this account are generated by ticket sales at athletic events. They generally pay for Game-Day expenses such as: Game Officials Part-Time Staff (ticket takers, announcers, official timers and scorekeepers) Police Officers

The Board has supplemented the Athletic Activities Account from the General Fund to pay for Game Day Operations because ticket sales are not sufficient to cover all Game-Day expenses and the gap continues to grow.

Ticket Sales 2016 - 2017 Relying upon a variable source of revenue to fund fixed costs. Vary greatly depending on game opponents (is it apt to be a competitive game or a blow-out), weather conditions, current success (or lack thereof) and any other number of variables that are difficult to quantify. Regardless of how many people pass through the gate, the game will be played and will have to be funded. The cost of Game Day Operations continues to rise each year but the gate receipts are maxed out and only varied slightly year to year.

Hockey Hockey is different than any other sport – co-op team CIAC permits schools to combine players if they would not be able to support a team on their own MPS sponsors the Milford Indians Co-op team with players from Law, Foran & Platt Tech The hockey program is administered by the J. Law Athletic Director

Hockey Board pays for coaches, transportation, athletic trainer, and ice time Game day operations funded by ticket sales Platt Tech contributes $600 per player toward the expenses of the program Other expenses such as uniforms, equipment, etc. are paid for by player participation fee

Hockey 2014-2015 – the Board increased funding for the hockey program (additional funds for an Assistant Coach, additional ice time, and transportation) Goal of Board is fully fund the program over time Player participation fee reduced considerably due to increased Board funding Fee: 2012-2013: $850 per player 2013-2014: $233 per player 2014-2015: $280 per player 2015-2016: $270 per player 2016-2017: $200 per player

Girls Hockey Milford Public Schools participates with a girls hockey co-op team hosted by Notre Dame High School of Fairfield Students from Foran and Law are eligible to participate Participation fee: $1,500 per player Parents pay $900 Starting in 2015-2016 MPS agreed to pay $600 per player (Same as arrangement with Platt Tech for the boys team) Participation: 2014-2015 2 students 2015-2016 3 students 2016-2017 7 Students
