Currently automobile manufacturers use a large variety of automated processes. Conveyors Vision Robotics Part Feeders Sensors Huge Communication Networks ...and more Little use for ASRS or AGV’s.
Costs Varies depending on size and complexity. Bannon Automotive in Long Island, NY - $30 Million -150,000 sq. Ft. Ford in Hangzhou, China - $760 Million Hyundai in Alabama - $1.1 Billion Hyundai in Jeonju, Korea - 4.3 mil. sq. ft.

Integration Evolution Large Investment. Big Return Uses massive amounts of computing and communication. Evolution Sheet metal stamping Inaccurate and problematic Tooling is expensive and one model use. Movement toward intelligent processes (sensors and vision)

Class Application Every other automation process is used so… Why not use AGV’s? Every part goes to the same place every time, so conveyors and rails are more economical, precise, and can be cheaper. (Of course there are always exceptions.) Why not use ASRS? The use of an ASRS on a large scale would mean the storage of parts and materials. This goes against the principles of LEAN manufacturing. However, some storage is used to prevent the delay of parts being delivered to assembly.
