Research has shown that student success is impeded when their most basic needs of food and housing are not met first. Low wage workers jobs are: Irregular and unpredictable work schedules Without paid family or medical leave Full-time worker annual minimum wage - $15,080, is below federal poverty threshold for a family of three.

Kentucky’s Poverty Challenges Kentucky Center for Education and Workforce Statistics (KCEWS, 2015) Kentucky ranks 47th nationally Living in Poverty KY US Appalachian Region 18.8% 15.4% 25.2% The Commonwealth of KY profile ranks KY ….. 18.8% of KY’s population live at or below the poverty level as compared to 15.4% nationally If we consider the Appalachian region the poverty rate jumps up dramatically to 25.2%

KCTCS Institutional Analysis Independent Pell Grant Recipients Below Poverty Level 14,846 61.63% KCTCS looked at all students who had applied for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Of the 29K PELL independent recipients, 62 % were below the poverty level and determined financial eligibility for various federal public assistance programs. EXTRA INFORMATION
