CHAPTER 7 IONIC COMPOUNDS AND METALS 7-1 ION FORMATION Valence electrons are the electrons in the outer-energy level.... dot diagrams show valence electrons.

Monotomic Ions With 1 Charge You should be able to write the ion formed by any A element, and those B elements in column numbers with Roman numerals I, II, and III.... the Roman numeral tells you the + charge of the ion formed in that column. For some monatomic ions, there are 2 possible charges...you should learn the chart you are given to know the charge of those ions. These ions are used to write the ionic formula . A formula unit is the representative particle of the ionic compound...the smallest part of the compound that has all the properties of the compound.

A Element Ion Charges

Ion Formation Atoms form ions to form valence shells like the noble gases, with filled outer shells. Atoms gain or lose to get full outer shells...they do this with the easiest way. If it is closer to a noble gas to gain it will gain...if it closer to lose, it will lose electrons... find the closest noble gas to an A element and the change to that outer shell determines the charge of the ion.

Monatomic Ions With 2 Charges The COPs in the MERCURY LED 10 BLOCKS... This saying will help you remember the dual-charge monatomic ions. (See the chart for the Block.) Copper and Mercury form 1+ and 2+ ions. Lead and Tin form 2+ and 4+ ions. The BLOCK all form 2+ and 3+ ions. (See Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co)

Pseudo-Noble Gas Configurations The B elements, and A elements farther than 4 electrons away from noble gases, become pseudo-noble gas configurations. s2p6d10 Instead of an octet and filling s2p6 the s, p, and d are filled for 18 electrons s2p6d10

Forming Ionic Compounds Ionic compounds are formed by + and - attractions...the + and - attract to form a neutral compound and ionic bond.
