The Torah, the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Old Testament By Ada M. Stockwell

The Dead Sea Scrolls

How Were the Dead Sea Scrolls Found? A young shepherd wandered around the country side, looking after his sheep. He threw stones in some caves nearby to pass the time, when a stone struck pottery, and the pottery smashed. The shepherd went to investigate, and found thousands of scrolls and fragments of scrolls in jars all around the cave. They were the DEAD SEA SCROLLS

Why are the Dead Sea Scrolls so Important? Many things were written in the dead sea scrolls, but they mainly show us that the people who have written the bible today have not changed the words that were originally written, because they believed that they were truly writing the word of God. The books in the dead sea scrolls are the same as the first ones in the bible and the Torah: The Ten Commandments Tefillin Minor Prophets Genesis Psalms Community rule Leviticus/Paleo Leviticus And More…

Fun Facts!!! The scrolls are made of papyrus, parchment and animal skins The book of Esther was the only book in the old testament that was not found in the caves The caves in which the scrolls were found number 11 Only caves 1 and 11 contain scrolls that are full and readable and not fragments (small pieces) Cave number 3 contains a scroll called ‘the copper scroll’ which reads like an ancient Indiana Jones quest

The Torah

What is the Torah? It contains the five books of Moses. It is read four times a week in synagogues around the world. It is made of many sheets of parchment sewn together to make a whole book. The Torah is the Jewish holy book and is very important.

How Does the Torah Affect Jew’s Lives? The Torah affects Jew’s lives because it is a book of God’s words and his laws. They are the Jew’s commandments, what they must do every day. They contain the ten commandments, the laws God gave to Moses on the top of the mountain. These commandments are also used in the Christian religion. Use God’s name with respect Worship God only Put God first Remember God’s Sabbath Do not be jealous of others Respect your parents Don’t steal someone elses husband or wife Do not steal Do not murder anybody Do not lie

Fun Facts!!! There are 304,805 letters in the Torah Each page has 42 lines The person who writes the Torah is called a Sofer, and must be specially trained A Sofer must know more than 4000 Jewish laws before he can write a Torah It takes about a year to write a whole Torah The first Torah was written by Moses

The Old Testament

What is in the Old Testament? The old testament is the first part of the Bible, and has lots of different books. It is about God’s people before Jesus was born. These are some of the books it contains… Numbers Genesis Leviticus Exodus Deuteronomy Ruth Judges Joshua And More…

How was the Old Testament Created? The people told stories about their God to each other. The people who heard these stories passed them on to other people These people wrote them down, as did many others The written down stories were collected They formed the Old Testament

Fun Facts!!! The Old Testament contains the same beliefs as the Torah Testament means agreement, so Old Testament means Old Agreement There are 39 books altogether There are 929 chapters The smallest book is Obadiah The shortest chapter is 1 chronicles 1:25
