Presentation transcript:

Evidence for Evolution- The Record of Life Fossils-trace of a long-dead organism formed in layers of sedimentary rock usually develop from hard body parts of an organism *Robert Hooke concluded that fossils were remains of plants and animals

Paleontologists Study ancient life Learn about behavior, ancient climate and geography Formation Organism is buried in mud, sand, or clay Particles are compressed Hardens into sedimentary rock

Trace Fossils footprints, feeding marks

Casts Minerals in rocks fill a space left by a decayed organism A replica

Molds Organism is buried in sediment and decays, leaving an empty space

Petrified Fossils Minerals penetrate and replace the hard parts of an organism

Amber or Frozen Fossils Organism is trapped in ice or tree sap and hardened into amber

Fossils Cont. Relative age -the age of a fossil in comparison to the age of another fossil Absolute age -age in years of a fossil

Extinctions 95% of the species that have existed are extinct! Careers-paleontologists and biogeography Five mass extinctions?-maybe six? One now?
