Kingdom Protista 3 GROUPS OF PHYLA: ANIMAL-LIKE, PLANT-LIKE AND FUNGAL-LIKE PROTISTS ARE: UNICELLULAR, COLONIAL, OR MULTICELLULAR; EUKARYOTIC; MOSTLY HETEROTROPHIC;
EUKARYOTES.
Introduction to Kingdom Protista Domain Eukarya, Kingdom Protista –Any eukaryote that is not classified as a fungus, plant or animal Three major groups:
Protists Protists are a range of organisms that have many different features. This makes them really hard to classify.

KINGDOM: PROTISTA

Protists… Protists are either: plant-like, animal-like or fungus-like.

Prokaryotic vs. Eukaryotic nucleus All Protists are Eukaryotic!!!! They have a nucleus!!!

How protists eat… Plant-like protists are autotrophs – they contain chloroplasts and make their own food. Animal-like and fungus-like protists and are heterotrophs.

Asexual vs. Sexual Reproduction… Protists reproduce through both asexual and sexual reproduction. Euglena = asexual Paramecium = sexual

A) Euglena- PLANT-LIKE PROTIST one celled alga that moves with one flagellum red eyespot near front end to find light…Why? have chlorophyll and can make their own food ( ) autotroph

Animal-like protists Amoeba one-celled Heterotroph Asexual reproduction

Animal-like Protists…Amoeba live in water or moist places. They have a cell membrane Eukaryotic Heterotrophs Pseudopods for movement

Animal-like Protists…Paramecium Move by cilia Heterotroph – eat other protists Sexual reproduction cilia

Autotroph / Heterotroph ALGAE Plant-like and Animal-like Multicellular Autotroph Cell Wall Unicellular Autotroph Cell Wall Unicellular Autotroph / Heterotroph Cell Wall

Do we see protists everyday? For good uses: Ice Cream Kelp Used to thicken foods For Bad Uses Red Tide – Bad!!!! Kills fish and other living things

Absorbed red dinoflagellates  Red Tide Kills Fish  Absorbed red dinoflagellates After encountering and absorbing a red tide..a stingray becomes disoriented. They have the appearance of not being able to see or control what they are doing. Eventually the ray will stay at the surface lying horizontally and die. http://www.hku.hk/civil/dept_activities/eutrowrk/images/red_tide.jpg
