Today’s Bellringer 04/15/13 Read this sentence from an article. Read the dictionary entry for the word lethal: “Migratory birds, those that spend the winter in one place and the summer in another, fly high when the weather is nice.” What situation most closely resembles the behavior of migratory birds? Simple and Compound Sentences Simple Sentence- a sentence that must have a subject, verb, and a complete thought. Example: The fresh apple tasted good for a snack. (__) 1.) Simple Sentence with Compound Parts-When a sentence includes two or more parts, such as a compound subject or verb, even though it expresses one thought. Example: Sara’s mom and dad worked in the yard. (____) Sara’s dad raked and burned the leaves in the yard. (____) 2.) Compound Sentence-two complete sentences joined together correctly. Ways to Combine a. Use a comma and conjunction (ForAndNorButOrYetSo) (Ex. The mosquito flew around my head, but I ignored it. b. Use a semicolon and a transitional word. (Ex. The mosquito flew around my head; however, I ignored it. c. Use a semicolon only (Ex. The mosquito flew around my head; I ignored it.
