Evaluating Ethical Actions Actions can be evaluated using a variety of tests

Do the benefits outweigh the harms, short term and long term? Harm Test Harms Benefits Do the benefits outweigh the harms, short term and long term?

Would I think this was a good choice if I traded places? Reversibility Test Would I think this was a good choice if I traded places?

What would my professional colleagues say? Colleague Test What would my professional colleagues say?

Would my choice violate a law or policy of my employer? Legality Test S O P Would my choice violate a law or policy of my employer?

How would my choice look on the front page of a newspaper? Publicity Test How would my choice look on the front page of a newspaper?

Common Practice Test What if everyone behaved this way?

Wise Relative Test What would my wise old aunt or uncle do? or Would I want them to know what I am doing?

Do I want others to know what I’m doing? The Hiding Test Do I want others to know what I’m doing?

Does this choice “smell” and feel right? “Smell” Test Does this choice “smell” and feel right?

And Finally, the Self-Respect Test How will I feel about myself after making this choice?

But all these tests promote decisions based on how we “feel” about what we do. Various Ethics Tests Do the Right Thing Because it is the Right Thing to Do However, the best decision is to “Do the right thing because it is the right thing to do.”

Ethical Leadership The Importance of Ethical Leadership

A Vital Step in Achieving Excellence ETHICS: A Vital Step in Achieving Excellence Excellence  Faculty ETHICS Student EXPERIENCE EDUCATION Adequacy

What is Important for Ethical Leaders? An effective ethical leader will… …Create “Candor” in the workplace… …an environment where the employee feels safe bringing up and resolving ethical issues.

Effective Ethical Leaders? An effective ethical leader will … … Foster an environment of “Trust” among individuals in the Workplace… …and this trust will encourage openness among team members without fear of retribution.

Effective Ethical Leaders? An effective ethical leader will: Treat everyone as intrinsically valuable… and not as a means to an end.

How Do We Develop Ethical Leadership Skills? To achieve “Ethical Leadership Skills” in our profession, in both education and industry, Here are a few traits that leaders should consider developing:

Leaders Need to Develop Understanding ... A clear understanding of professional ethics

Leaders Need to Develop Communication Skills An ability and willingness to communicate ethical issues.

Leaders Need to Develop Ability to recognize ethical issues.

Leaders Need to Develop Appreciation for the frequency at which ethical issues occur.

Leaders Need to Develop Awareness that guidance on ethical dilemmas is available from a variety of sources

Leaders Need to Develop Comprehension ... “Knowing What’s Right”

Leaders Need to Develop The Desire, Willingness and Courage … ... to “Do What’s Right”

Leaders Need to Develop Ability to resolve ethical issues by using traditional methods of inquiry, namely: Listing options Testing the options Making a decision, and Most importantly, Acting !

An Interesting Thought About Professional Ethics 

Ethics

If the “Ethics Rope” Breaks We All Lose !

Ethical considerations are an integral part of making engineering decisions.
