Slide show for Nov 17th Earth Science Class
Science Warm-up Write in your agenda: Quiz on Earth’s Layers Wed!! Work on your glossary or your flipbook.
Crust Composition = oxygen, silicon, & aluminum, iron, magnesium, calcium Thickness = 5 to 100 km State of matter = solid Less than 1% of Earth’s mass. Temperatures range from Air temp to 1,000 Degrees Celsius Oceanic crust is heavier than continental crust.
Mantle Composition = mostly magnesium, little aluminum & silicon Thickness = 2,550 to 2,900 km State of Matter = asthenosphere is liquid/solid and Lithosphere is solid. Contains most of the Earth’s mass 67% Temperatures from 1,000 to 3,700 degrees Celsius Scientists must study volcanoes to understand!
Outer Core Composition = Iron & Nickel Thickness = 2,200 km State of Matter = liquid
Inner Core Composition = Iron & Nickel Thickness = 1,230 km State of Matter = solid Makes 1/3 of the Earth’s mass. Temperatures are 3,700 – 7,000 degrees Celsius. This part spins (magnetic field).
