What is a folktale? A story that began long ago, spoken from person to person A story passed down through the ages Teaches a lesson Explains why things are as they are

Characteristics of a folktale Simple and straight forward Magic or supernatural powers Characters represent human qualities such as good, evil, wisdom Problems and conflicts occur A happy ending Good rewarded, evil punished

Trickster tales from different cultures North America: coyote, hare Africa: spider, tortoise Japan: badger Europe: fox, wolf

Examples of trickster tales “The Tale of Rabbit and Coyote” A Mayan tale of a clever rabbit and the tricks he uses to escape from the coyote “The Tortoise and the Hare” A North American tale of a race between the speedy hare and the slow, yet steady tortoise.

Tall Tales How did tall tales start? Settlers who made homes in the American wilderness made up stories

Favorite Tall Tales Pecos Bill ~ A story about the best cowboy the world has ever seen. He was raised by coyotes, wrestled a rattlesnake, rode a cougar, tamed a wild mustang named Widow Maker, and rode a twister across the west. He alone started the cattle drive to Kansas and he made the Grand Canyon.

Favorite Tall Tales Paul Bunyan ~ A tale of gigantic size about a giant lumberjack who lives in the forests of the Northern Mid-west, befriends a blue ox named Babe and clears all of forest alone.

Favorite Tall Tales “John Henry” ~ The African- American tale about the steel drivin’ man who could drive more nails into the track than hundreds of men put together.
