Balloon-Rocket Lab Make-up Remember: Labs are always more interesting/fun when you are in class!

Instructions: What are we doing in this lab? In this lab, you will test Newton’s 1st law of inertia: Objects with mass have inertia. The more mass an object has, the more inertia. The more inertia an object has, the more difficult it is to accelerate an object with a force. We will use a balloon as our object. The air inside will provide the force. Questions to test today: 1) What happens to the inertia as mass is added? 2) What happens to the velocity if the force (air amount) remains the same? No masses =control test 2 masses added 4 masses added 6 masses added

Predict: What’s going to happen in the experiment? Consider what you have learned about Newton’s Laws of Motion… What does inertia actually mean? More inertia means what for motion? So as we add mass, what can you predict will happen to the velocity of the balloon? Zero extra mass = what velocity? 2 extra masses = faster or slower? 4 extra masses = faster or slower? 6 extra masses = faster or slower?

Experiment: Time 0 mass test (control): 3 sec. Record the time and distance for each balloon test 0 m 1 m 2 m 3 m 4 m 5 m Time 0 mass test (control): 3 sec. Record the data in your table… Time 6 mass test: 10 sec Record the data in your table… Time 4 mass test: 8 sec Record the data in your table… Time 2 mass test: 6 sec. Record the data in your table… The data given will not match exactly what you see the balloon do on this slide, but data given is realistic for the experiment… Masses Leftover

Conclude: What should you learn from this lab? Test # Masses Time (sec) Distance (m) Velocity 1 (control) 2 3 4 6 Distance (meters) Take notice of what the velocity trend is as you added mass Make sure all your data has been collected Time (sec) Plot your data from the table into the graph Solve for each Velocity (V=D/T) Each test should get it’s own line (4 total lines) Based upon what you learned about the steepness of a line, which test had the fastest velocity? Which test had the slowest? Does this make sense? Label each line to keep track of each test Based upon what you have observed, what effect on velocity does more mass have?
