Ecosystem Organization (c) 2012 S. Coates

Ecosystem Organization An ecosystem is made up of all the LIVING and NON-LIVING parts of an area. As you revel each picture on this slide have students identify if it is a picture or living or non-living objects. (c) 2012 S. Coates

Ecosystem Organization The living parts of an ecosystem are called BIOTIC FACTORS. Biotic factors include any item that comes from a living organism, like eggs, fur, feces, feathers, snake skin, etc. (c) 2012 S. Coates

Ecosystem Organization The non- living parts of an ecosystem are called ABIOTIC FACTORS. Abiotic factors include temperature, wind, sunlight, fresh water, salt water, rainfall, etc. in an area (c) 2012 S. Coates

Ecosystem Organization The organisms in an ecosystem can be organized into groups. From simple to complex, the groups are: Organism Population Community Ecosystem/Biome Biosphere (c) 2012 S. Coates

Ecosystem Organization Organism: an individual member of a species. Example: An elk (c) 2012 S. Coates

Ecosystem Organization Population: a group of individuals of the same species that live together. Example: Herd of elk (c) 2012 S. Coates

Ecosystem Organization Community: All of the populations of species that live and interact in an area. Example: Mountain animals--eagles, elk and deer, wolves, bears, mountain lions (c) 2012 S. Coates

Ecosystem Organization Ecosystem or Biome: Community of organisms plus the abiotic environment of the community. Example: Mountain animals and forest climate (c) 2012 S. Coates

Ecosystem Organization Biosphere: The part of Earth where life exists. (From the deepest parts of the ocean to high in the air). (c) 2012 S. Coates

Ecosystem Organization Types of Ecosystems: Temperate Forest Desert Urban Tropical Forest Marine Tundra River Wetland (c) 2012 S. Coates

Ecosystem Organization Remember, ecosystems are made up of biotic and abiotic factors. The abiotic factors determine which biotic factors are in an ecosystem. For example, in the desert: Abiotic Factors: -Little rainfall -High temps. -Little humidity -Sandy soil (c) 2012 S. Coates

Abiotic Factors: -Little rainfall -High temps. -Little humidity -Sandy soil These abiotic factors mean that only these biotic factors can exist in a desert area: (c) 2012 S. Coates http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert_animals

Abiotic Factors: -High rainfall -Constant temps. -High humidity -Wet soil These abiotic factors mean that only these biotic factors can exist in a rainforest area: (c) 2012 S. Coates http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapir

Abiotic factors in an area can be graphed. For example, this is a graph of the average temperature during each month of the year in Salt Lake City, UT. (c) 2012 S. Coates

For example, this is a graph of the average precipitation during each month of the year in Salt Lake City, UT. (c) 2012 S. Coates

Ecosystem Organization The average temperature and average precipitation graphs can be shown together in order to see the annual climate statistics… We call this graph a “climatograph” (c) 2012 S. Coates

Ecosystem Organization Let’s Summarize: Ecosystems are made up of abiotic and biotic factors The parts of an ecosystem can be organized into groups: Species Population Community Ecosystem Biosphere Climatographs are graphs that indicate the average temperature and precipitation in a city (and ecosystem) (c) 2012 S.
