OBJECTIVES Objective 1: Identify differences between prescription and over the counter medicines Objective 2: Identify how to read a medicine label. Objective 3: Identify the difference between medicine misuse and abuse. Objective 4: Identify the commonly abused over the counter and prescription drugs and their effects.

Standards for Medicines All medicines in the U.S. must meet standards set by the FDA. Drug manufacturers must complete 3 clinical trials, including human volunteers. They monitor the drug’s effects and identify any harmful side effects. The FDA does not regulate herbal and dietary supplements.

Prescription vs. over-the-counter Prescription Medicines: are medicines that are dispensed only with the written approval of a licensed physician or nurse practitioner. A prescription medicine should be taken ONLY by the person whose name is on the label. Over-the-Counter: medicines you can buy without a doctor’s prescription. Some O.T.C.’s are kept behind the counter depending on their active ingredients. These may be abused to get a high or to make illegal drugs

Medicine Label When the FDA approves a medicine, it is considered safe when used as directed. The FDA requires that all prescription and OTC medicine labels contain information telling consumers how to use the medicine safely and effectively. Open your books to page 532 to review an OTC medicine label

Medicine Labels Compare Active Ingredients Name brand vs. generic.

Medicine Misuse Involves using a medicine in ways other than the intended use. Examples: Failing to follow the instructions. Giving a prescription medicine to another person. Taking too much or too little of a medicine Video: The silent high, prescription drug abuse https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCZxHfxK43A Video: Teenagers abusing Rx Drugs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNIowsFLgNM Taking medicine longer or shorter than prescribed or recommended. Discontinuing use of a medicine without informing the health care professional Ex. antidepressant, blood pressure, antibiotic Mixing medicines.

Medicine Abuse Is intentionally taking medications for nonmedical reasons. Teens should avoid using drugs to: Lose weight or stay awake while studying To fit in with peers Taking any medicine that was prescribed to someone else. Drug Overdose: a strong, sometimes fatal reaction to taking a large amount of a drug. Misusing medicines can also lead to addiction!
