Objectives and Agenda IB 1.3 Vectors Agenda Assignment: Adding vectors analytically Agenda Homework review Work session Assignment: Complete the Vector Darts Lab

Adding Vectors Analytically Add A = 4.0 N at 30 and B = 8.0 N at 135analytically 1) Resolve all vectors into x and y components (Ax = A cos θ, Ay = A sin θ) 2) Add all x components to find resultant x component, Rx 3) Add all y components to find resultant y component, Ry 4) Convert resultant components into magnitude and direction. 𝑹 𝒙 𝟐 + 𝑹 𝒚 𝟐 and 𝒕𝒂𝒏 −𝟏 ( 𝑹 𝒚 𝑹 𝒙 ) , (add 180o if Rx is negative.) Usually best to organize this information in a table

Sample Addition problem A pack of four Arctic wolves are exerting four different forces upon the carcass of a 500 kg dead polar bear. Wolf one is pulling on the bear with a force of 20 Newtons (N) due north. Wolf two is pulling on the bear with a force of 30 N, 30 degrees north of west. Wolf three is pulling on the bear with a force of 25 N due west, and wolf four is pulling on the bear with a force of 35 N, 10 degrees west of south. Determine the net force acting upon the polar bear and the direction of that force measured north of west. Add analytically.

Exit Slip - Assignment What is the magnitude and the direction for a vector with components of 64.3 N east and 72.0 N north? What’s Due on Friday Sept 29? (Pending assignments to complete.) Vector dart lab due on Tuesday Oct 4 What’s Next? (How to prepare for the next day) Read p45-50
