Rise of Dictatorships

What is a Dictatorship? Every aspect of people’s lives is controlled by the government The government is 1 main person (The Dictator) Closely connected to Fascism

Fascism Opposed to democracy Extremely nationalistic Rely on military & police power to maintain absolute control Control all media Use propaganda to promote state ideals Does this sound familiar?

Rise of Fascist Governments Why would the situation of the world in the 1930s encourage the rise of a fascist style government? Discuss with a partner

Condition of Europe Economies of Europe never recovered from WW1 (repairing their country / paying for the war / creating new jobs /etc) 1930s depression made everything WORSE Unemployment = high Food = very little available Lawlessness (criminals) = became a major problem

Communism is Only Solution! Communism is hypothetical Classless moneyless, stateless social order structured upon common ownership of the means of production

Others think Fascism Need a strong military to take back order & control! Result was: Powerful leaders took control & were dictators & suppressed all opposition

Stalin in Russia “The Man of Steel” Ruthless & Cruel Ruled Russia as a Totalitarian state (similar to Fascist)

Benito Mussolini in Italy Leader of Fascist government in Italy

Hitler in Germany The most Powerful Fascist party = The Nazi Party Nazi Party Leader = Adolf Hitler
