Topic Sentence States the topic and the controlling idea of the paragraph. The controlling idea tells the reader what will be said about the topic. Ex. High school is a challenging experience. Having a best friend is important.

A Topic Sentence Do not OVERGENERALIZE Riverside is awesome. Do not be TOO SPECFIC Riverside has excellent elective courses to offer such as Drama, Information Techonolgy, Cafeteria, Keyboarding and Jazz Band.

Supporting Sentences/The Body The body of a paragraph has supporting sentences It gives detail through examples, descriptions, explanations, facts and or opinions to develop the main idea of the paragraph.

The Concluding Sentence The Concluding Sentence re-states the Topic Sentence in another way. Ex. In conclusion, high school students are faced with both academic and social challenges.

PEE Method Topic: Describe Riverside high school Point – Riverside is a wonderful school because of the many extra-curricular activities that are available to students. Evidence – Riverside offers extra-curricular activities from sports, to clubs to the arts. For example, during the fall, we have a swim team, junior and varsity volleyball.
