Napoléon

Phases of the Revolution So far we already covered: 1789-1791: the National Assembly 1793-1794: the Reign of Terror Today we will talk about: 1795-1799: the Directory 1799-1804: the Consulate 1804-1815: the Empire

The Coalition Wars France was at war with most of the rest of Europe from 1792-1815. France began to win these wars but each time, a new coalition would form to try and defeat France. In total, France would fight against seven different Coalitions. France won against all but the 6th and 7th.

The Directory 1795-1799 Under the name of the Directory, The French Revolutionary government became less violent but far more corrupt.

The Directory 1795-1799 The last government of the Revolution was called the directory. The French people did not like the Directory—it was viewed as corrupt and ineffective. The Directory was only kept alive by the army. By 1799, the Directory was deeply dependent on Napoleon Bonaparte—France’s most popular and successful general.

Who was Napoleon? Lifelong soldier General of the Army of the West in 1795 Leader of France by 1799 Emperor in 1804 Extremely capable general Overly ambitious Believed in stability over everything. Not actually short.

The Consulate: 1799-1804 In 1799, Napoleon and two of his allies took over the government by force. Napoleon would rule as a dictator from 1799 to 1815.

The French Empire Under Napoleon, France would conquer most of Western and Central Europe. Napoleon sought to replace the monarchies, which he viewed as outdated, with republican dictatorships and modern laws.
